Mike has played, recorded, and toured extensively with singer/songwriter Marc O’ Reilly since 2014. During this time he’s been lucky to perform in the U.S., U.K., Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and a tour of the Balkan countries. Mike has worked with artists of varied styles, both as a live performer and studio musician, such as Ariel Posen, Jack O’ Rourke, Niall McCabe, The Hard Ground, Tiz McNamara, and Mick Flannery

This week I'm chatting to Los Angeles native, electric bass player, Nick Campbell who is reinventing the jazz genre for this generation. Flipping traditional conventions on their head, Nick’s unique penchant for superimposing triadic patterns over static harmony has brought a modern twist to “getting modal,” creating a distinctive yet eccentric sound of his own.

Mirroring the musical inclusivity of his work, Nick has taken the stage with music artists of all genres. From traditional jazz bands to pop music sensations, he can be seen performing with Pomplamoose, Scary Pockets, Charlie Puth, Vulfpeck, Meghan Trainor, Raquel Rodriguez, Nigel Hall, Josh Smith, Kirk Fletcher, Michael Mayo and Moonchild (to name a few) and composing original music with bands such as Shrek Is Love and Bear Attack.

Joel McIver ( Editor Bass Player )

This week Im having a chat with Joel McIver. Since 2012, Joel has been the editor of Bass Guitar magazine, and since 2018, editor of Bass Player after the two publications merged. His best-known work is Justice for All: The Truth About Metallica, first published in 2004 and appearing in nine languages since then. As well as writing his own books, McIver also co-writes musicians' autobiographies. The first of these was the memoir of sometime Deep Purple bassist Glenn Hughes, published in 2011. Other memoirs co-written by McIver include those of Max Cavalera of Soulfly, Megadeth bassist David Ellefson, David Bowie's former drummer Woody Woodmansey and blues veteran John Mayall.

Joel's latest book Fathers, Brothers, and Sons: Surviving Anguish, Abandonment, and Anthrax Hardcover by Frank Bello and Joel McIver is out Oct 12th.

He spent 8 years touring the world with Ellie Goulding and also held down the low-end in Kyle Minogue's band for a year. He is often cited in lists of the world's greatest-tone alchemists such as Tim Lefebvre, Janik Gwizdala, and Steve Lawson. This was a brilliant chat and I was schooled on this effects stuff and really enjoyed hearing about Simons's bass journey. Bio:
Jake Gerba is a bassist from western Pennsylvania that has made a name for himself on social media through his entertaining and energetic videos. He began playing the bass at age 13 and soon started to play at his local church where he learned to develop his skills. Now with a worldwide online audience, he continues to showcase his funk bass playing inspired by the likes of Louis Johnson, Bernard Edwards, Bootsy Collins, and Flea. Jake has also produced and recorded a solo album, made an appearance at NAMM, worked with various big name companies within the music industry, and even jammed with actor and fellow bass enthusiast Jason Momoa. No matter what he’s doing, Jake’s mission remains the same: to uplift people through the power and joy of music.

Toronto-born electric bassist Rich Brown has established himself as an incredibly versatile artist. Along with being one of the most called upon electric bass players in Canada, Rich is additionally a composer, producer, bandleader, educator and clinician, broadcaster, and voiceover artist. He has recorded three albums as a leader, and appears as a sideman on a plethora of recordings ranging from Jazz to Funk to traditional Arabic and Asian music. Brown has performed with a wide variety of artists including Rudresh Mahanthappa, Steve Coleman, Angelique Kidjo, Kurt Elling, and James Blood Ulmer among many others. He leads two groups—rinsethealgorithm and The Abeng—and was nominated for a Juno Award in 2016 for his latest album ‘Abeng’.

2016 with a BA in Commercial Modern Music, he has gone on to tour internationally as a session bass player, synth bass player, and backing
vocalist with a number of Irish acts including James Vincent McMorrow and Sorcha Richardson. This has included shows in such prestigious venues as

His debut record, ROAD NOT TAKEN was released on the 7th of February 2019, which was well-received by jazz audiences around the world. His second record, titled PERENNIAL was released on the 27th of February 2021.

This week I sat down with Conor King. One of the most in demand session bass players in Ireland. Conor tours with many of the biggest acts in Ireland and can often be seen laying down the low-end on main stages and on National TV.

2020 started off strongly, working with producer Phillip Mcgee on Irish pop artist Isaac Butler's music. This year he is hoping for big things with his own band " Milk" . Conor gave some very interesting insights into the Irish scene and getting work as a bass player today.
